Groupex was established in 1984 by a small group of independent restaurants. Responding to pricing competition from large foodservice chains, this group combined their purchases to earn volume discounts and rebates. Today Groupex uses the buying power of its national membership base to negotiate savings on essential restaurant supplies and services. Groupex programs cover the most essential foodservice products and services. Members save thousands of dollars on beverages, food, operational and financial programs.

Groupex members come from all segments of the hospitality industry from family-style restaurants to fine dining rooms to hotels, golf courses, bowling centres, stadiums and quick service operations.

About Restaurants Canada

Since its founding in 1944, Restaurants Canada (formerly CRFA) has grown to more than 30,000 members across the country. Through advocacy, research, member savings and industry events, they help their members in every Canadian community grow and prosper. Restaurants Canada members represent every sector of Canada’s vibrant and innovative foodservice industry, including restaurants, bars, cafeterias, coffee shops, and contract and social caterers. They also welcome suppliers to our industry as associate members of Restaurants Canada. Restaurants Canada’s head office is in Toronto, and they have regional offices in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Halifax.

Thirty years ago, a small group of Canadian independent restaurateurs met for the first time to discuss the future of their business and the competition they were facing. The agenda focused specifically on how they could compete with the number of emerging chain restaurants. They introduced the concept of Groupex to the industry with a mandate to find purchasing efficiencies through group buying. Although the foodservice industry has evolved dramatically in the past 30 years, Groupex remains true to their original vision which is to provide independent restaurants with the buying power of chains.

The next years will be full of new trends, economic ups and downs, and many of the same issues faced by the industry in the past. Groupex is poised to continue developing new programs and deliver value added offerings to ensure the growth, prosperity and viability of our members.
